The Obama administration is proposing to open vast expanses
of water along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of
Mexico and the north coast of Alaska to oil and natural gas
drilling for the first time, officials said Tuesday.

The proposal -- a compromise that will please oil companies
and domestic drilling advocates but anger some residents of
affected states and many environmental organizations -- would
end a longstanding moratorium on oil exploration along the
East Coast from the northern tip of Delaware to the central
coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean.

  1. This is just sad. Yes, Obama has never come out against gas drilling, having supported offshore drilling during his presdential campaign. Now that this will become a hot issue, I wonder why polluting the oceans is better than ruining land areas. We depend on the health of the oceans for our survival. Will there be fewer leaks, spills, and other accidents in the ocean? I don't think so. Water is the next cause of world wars. It is a finite resource. As Barbara Kingsolver wrote: "Water is life. It's the briny broth of our origins, the pounding circulatory system of the world. We stake our civilizations on the coasts and mighty rivers. Our deepest dread is the threat of having too little- or too much." So now we are thinking about industrializing the oceans on a grand scale? Wrong thinking.

Once again your comments point squarely at the heart of a situation and ask us to think carefully!
    Thank you!
